Dabbling in Darkness
Little Theatre's 'Todd' gets close

By: Alicia Grega-Pikul 09/23/2004

"Sweeney Todd" continues at Little Theatre of Wilkes-Barre on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and on Sunday at 3 p.m. Call 823-1875 for tickets.

The impressive sets and special effects that delight Broadway crowds, are the least likely aspect of theatrical production to materialize on the community theatre stage.

Local audiences have learned to live on strict rations of such mood-setting devices, but they'll never stop longing to be swept away to another world.

Admirably, Joe Sheridan's production of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" that opened at Little Theatre of Wilkes-Barre last weekend creates such a mood. I say Sheridan's production because as director, production designer/technical director and in the lead role of Sweeney Todd, the man has clearly staked his claim in this production.

The set is not only visually striking and successfully functional, it's also united in concept with dimly gothic Victorian lighting (Madison Izzo and Eddie Topper) and suitably drab costumes (Regina Schmid-Allen). With plenty of London fog, fiery diabolical light, and startling air horn blasts, the technical aspects of this production cheat us in few regards. Safety cushioning does repeatedly pops out of the "fresh meat" chute. It's distracting, but potentially repairable. Of greater concern are the body mics worn by Sheridan and Barbara Wilson as Mrs. Lovett. They fade in and out and are tuned so sensitively that we inappropriately pick up ensemble echo, off-stage whispering and at least one struggle to normalize breath.

More congenial than revengeful, Sheridan's voice is pleasant but not edgy. He finds the ironic beauty Sondheim built into strains of "The Barber and His Wife/Poor Thing" and "Pretty Women," and the playfulness of the pun-packed "A Little Priest." But the deeper soul of the songs eludes him. Wilson is nurturing but unsure of how to play the comic implications of her character. She struggles to keep up with Sondheim's quirky pacing. "By the Sea" could have easily been eliminated.

Dawn Winarski serves the show well as the beggar woman. Her character work is clear, her vocal work strong and other than Boberick, perhaps, she's the only one with a suitable accent. I really enjoyed watching her in this role.

Musically, the production is strongest during its few full-cast ensemble numbers. The pieces are balanced and certainly powerful. Alan Waclawski's resonant bass is a blessing in "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd." As Judge Turpin, the actor is unfortunately less effective. His self-flagellation in "Johanna" is creepy, but too literal a choice. His dialouge with Beadle (Marty Wentz) resonates like two businessmen chatting on a golf course - interesting, but it sticks out of the production's Victorian cloth.

Mark Boberick's trained Broadway-style voice is a relief. His duets with soprano Mariane Ferentino are satisfying, but it's his solo work on "Johanna," that blows the audience away. Seth Brandreth catches the kitsch of the con man barber Pirelli, but the actor's strengths are better represented in his ensemble work. Tony Alberti plays the childlike moron angle of Pirelli's assistant Tobias. He delivers a very pretty version of "Not While I'm Around," that is sadly diminished by a pop-star vocal style.

The climactic moments of the musical are chaotic and the finale somewhat clumsy, but the score and book are so darn good, you're just glad it's not "Oklahoma!" again. It at least tries to confront the audience.

Odds are "Sweeney Todd" won't be on our Broadway tour circuit any time soon. Little Theatre's production may suffer from sound issues and amateur acting, but it's by no means without merit. It's got plenty of atmosphere to go round and you'll enjoy soaking it up.

Dreamgirls and a Happy New Year

Its been 3 months
Christmas has come and gone
Another new year on its way
Hope your holiday was delightful

I have so many resolutions this year
most important - Im going to stop biting my nails
and focus focus focus is the new name of the game

and since we've last talked
I've met Jonathan
and we've been together for 3 months now
its nice

Dawn has moved to Philly
she got a new job at PENN
we're proud of her
she moved in with me
Mikhail moved to Chicago
we wish him well

Now, lets talk about DREAMGIRLS

Oh, this movie.
Oh Oh Oh this movie.

PHENOMENAL

Now last year I was fortunate enough
to catch DREAMGIRLS at the Prince Music Theatre
and that production
remains one of the best I've ever seen
and thats including the 100+ shows I've seen on Broadway

it was soo energized and fast paced
and I was worried the movie would not translate as well
and the pace would be lost

but it was not
it delivered
and Jennifer Hudson does her role proud

and Loretta Devine makes a cameo!!

GO SEE THIS MOVIE

and have a Happy, Safe, and Healthy New Year.

Love Always,
-Mark

the end?

I think the end is near for this blog.

I'm sort of over it.

I feel like I have nothing important to say
nothing really has any meaning.

and It's getting harder and harder for me to update.

looking back over the blog today, from the first day's article
all I could think of was "Ugh, shut up." or "WHO CARES!?"

A lot of me whining.
I hate whining.

So unless I decide to call it quits,
the posts I make from now on
will establish a clear thesis.

I'm not going to complain when I'm sick
that gets old quick
(and no one really cares)
I'm not going to moan about the work I have to do
or the work I've been putting off.
Yawn.
And I'm not going to talk about the heat, cold,
hurricanes, or the weather in general.

If thats all I have to say,
then I'm not going to waste your time.

some things...

under no circumstances
should anyone ever call me
"dawg."

I'm not your dawg.

I counted
15 times today
I was called "dawg."

now, I ask you...
what would have happened
if I called someone "dawg?"

right.
it wouldn't work, would it?

I just dropped Kelly and James
off at 30th St. Station

Had a lovely past few days with them

Liz is very ill
in Pennsylvania Hospital
Mom is beside herself

6 months to live
3 of which will not be good

I didn't come home this weekend
stayed to work on projects

yea...ask me how I did.

I watched the entire series
all 6 seasons
of Sex and the City

and then started the X Files

My therapist and I are working
on this procrastination thing

Its not working yet.

"Give it time' she says

well, ok...

this Saturday
I'm in NYC for the Yankees/Red Sox game
I actually enjoy the whole
take me out to the ballgame thing
its very zen and calming to me
and very sentimental

and in all my life
I've never felt closer to my father
than when I first step foot into Yankee Stadium
not even at his grave is his presence as strong

I know he has a season ticket.

And I also know he's bitching
about the $10 french fries.

overdue

yea yea, I know
I haven't updated in a while
well, actually I have
several times
each time, though
it never saved
and I lost everything I typed

and then rather than retyping it
I got frustrated and just left

so here I am

let me tell you about Meryl Streep
a few weeks ago, I met Santo in NYC
he took me to see Mother Courage
at Shakespeare in the Park
starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline
then backstage where I met them both

Meryl is lovely and Kevin's a chain smoker
both were extremely polite
Meryl and I talked for about 5 minutes

Oh! You know who came backstage with us?
Tracey Ullman, she was in the audience
Santo knows her
they did Bullets over Broadway together
the Woody Allen film

she's one of those what you see is what you get
kind of people
I love them
she said
"Oh, it's soooo looovely to come backstage
and say 'You were really terrific'
instead of having to say
'Oh...you were sooo brave.'"

Santo and I laughed all the way home

yesterday Dawn and I were in the city
we saw The History Boys
which is now definitely one of my
best nights at the theatre.
Alan Bennett is a tremendous playwright

I can't wait for the movie to come out.

Mom and Bill are in Vegas
I am home trying to get all of this work done

and I really have to delve into these set designs

I need to start a model for
You Can't Take it With You

I am 2 episodes away from finishing
Nip/Tuck season 3.

Season 4 starts Tuesday.
Woohoo!

now...before I hit save,
I'm going to copy this entry into Word...

"Murder in the Magnolias" Pictures

Saturday, August 12, 2006

this week is over
it was rough
I got behind on my projects
for obvious reasons
and pulled several overnighters

wednesday on the river with Anthony
was very nice
and relaxing and frankly,
just what I needed

the weather these past few days
has been delightful

this coming week will be pleasant
not much of anything is due

today I'm relaxing for a bit,
catching up on sleep
watching my latest Columbia House DVD shipment:

A Star is Born
Sunset Boulevard
Whos Afraid of Virginia Wolf
Zelig
Annie Hall
On Golden Pond

Last night's show was so good
the audience was superb
and I broke the fourth wall

and they loved it.

tonight we have a talkback
after the show
I thought it would be fun

normally talkbacks are boring
and uninteresting
even on Broadway

but this is a good show for one

NYC on Tuesday with Santo
Mother Courage in the Park at night

then backstage to see Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline.

Oh my.

they're just rowing...

what an emotional day

saw very old friends
some for the first time in many years

all of us there
as if we never parted ways
bonds as strong as ever

Jess was cremated
her body was destroyed in the accident

she fell asleep
never felt a thing

thanks be to God.

Lilly Lane
will grow up
to be just like her Mother
Im sure of that

I am sure we have not seen the last of Jess
and that is comforting

today, Christine Harvey
recalled a story to the congregation
as she spoke to pay tribute to Jess

it was a perfect example of why I loved Jess so much
and the amazing quick wit, humor, and personality
that I will forever remember her for

Christine told of the time
when she and Jess went to see "The Notebook"
in theatres
and there was a row of girls sitting behind them
who were bawling their eyes out
as Ryan Gosling rowed the boat
with Rachel McAdams in it
and the birds started to fly away
as the rain came pouring down

and Jess turned around to them and said
in her typical straightforward attitude

"They're just rowing."

Jess and Mark - Prom 2003

odd

I met Jess at an auction

she looked radiant
and I finally saw the baby
what was to be my godchild
had she been baptized.
She will be.

Now I can't help but think
that I met her that day for a reason

one last time

I am so distraught over this.

I've lost people in my life,
but Jess is different

Jess is a part of my youth
and she bridges the gaps
Jess is the girl who sat next to me in Kindergarten

Jess is the girl who I would always cheat with
in Mr. Young's class

Jess is the girl who always made me laugh
in Seminar

Jess was my shopping partner

and now Jess is gone.

I found my picture of us
at the prom
I loved her hair
she was beautiful

closed casket I'm sure.
stifled beauty

I want to remember Jess the way I saw her 3 weeks ago
happy, smiling, with Lilly on her hip, bidding on a box of Tupperware
and graciously accepting the microwave I won for her new house.

I love you Jess.
always.
